Like Hearing Alicia Keys for the First Time

The WhatUpWally? receptionist found this EP on Okayplayer this morning and we had to share it. It is like hearing an Alicia Keys before she became famous.

Here is what they said at Okayplayer:

I’m posting this EP today, three days after it dropped, because I’ve been too busy playing it non-stop to realize I never posted it. Little did I know, Eternia, the flame spittin’ T. dot emcee, has a sister with some serious musical talent as well. E put me on to singer/songwriter Kaya by way of her first EP, Imperfections. The project is described as “a collection of raw, unmixed demo’s & draft songs, recorded at home and released in their unfinished & imperfect form” … hence the title. The songs might be demos, but there’s nothing at all amateur about this music, give it a listen… or 20, like I have.

Family Matters

Not sure why I am posting this, but I am feeling very thankful today. Maybe it is the holiday weekend and I am away from home but I hope this may inspire others to tell the ones they love how much they appreciate them. It seems like we (as random people) only show our gratitude at specific times. When loved ones die we tell stories about how much they meant to us. When good friends move away we tell them why we wish they would stay. We ell our friends how great our family is but sometimes we just forget to tell our actual family how great they are. 


My father is an amazing man. Those of you that know him, know this well. He is selfless and always puts others in front of him. I have watched him lead a life of love that I can only hope to replicate. He is a man that has succeeded against all odds but more importantly he has helped others overcome the obstacles in their lives. People like my father are few and far between. I am privileged to know a number of great men. Famous men. Successful men. And I would not hesitate to put my father in the category with any of them. 


Some people know that life is more than a bank account, prestige, homes, cars, and country clubs. None of those things are bad but they are not all that there is in life. I have watched my father live a life that is successful without arrogance. A life that is driven to achieve but humble. My father is the reason that I have achieved anything. 


This weekend, WhatUpWally? would like to remind everyone to tell your loved ones how much they are loved.


Hey Dad,

In many ways I feel like I have let down our family by being so far away but I am thankful for the way you raised me. I know it may not seem like it because I am so distant. It is hard for me to be home in Cincinnati but I miss you greatly.

I don't know if you realize how great of a man you are. You are my inspiration. All OF the great opportunity and experiences I have had in my life have been because of you. I feel like you raised me to experience life to the fullest and I feel like I am!

Do you realize that I have been all over the US to Europe, to Mexico. I am getting my PhD! MY PHD! A kid like me should never have the opportunity that I have... but you have made sure that I succeed.

Sometimes I am sure that it looks like I am floundering and have no direction but I need you to know that I am deliberate about the things I do. I want you to know that I am always trying to be a good steward of the opportunities you have given me. Your sacrifice has made me who I am and I feel like I can be proud of the man I have become. I always hope that you are proud of me as well!

I have never apologized for leaving Hart so abruptly. I want you to know that I am thankful that you bailed me out of the position I was in. I really wanted to be the person to take over the family business. Maybe I am a coward and can't deal with life at home. I don't know. But I do want you to know that I am thankful. I am thankful that you got sober when you did. I am thankful that you have always taken care of me and looked after me. I am thankful that my father is a man of compassion and integrity. I am thankful that my father is humble. I am thankful that my father thinks of others before himself.

I have met a lot of fathers - rich and poor. I have met a lot of fathers that are successful and prestigious. I have never met a father with your strength and compassion.

You are my rock.

Culture Evolving

American culture has lamented the decline of the music video since MTV evolved from Yo!MTV Raps and Headbangers Ball to The Real World and The Flava of Love. But as video representation of music has evolved in the post MTV era, those involved in pop culture should be more excited than ever. Youtube and other outlets have freed musicians not only to express themselves creatively but have also created space for new artists to break into the mainstram from anonymity.

Artists have the opportunity to move past the 3:50 minute video that must adhere to corporate guidelines to sell advertising. They have been freed from the restraints of commercial culture and are exploring new avenues of creativity.


TV on The Radio released their new album Nine Types of Light today. The album itself lives up to the expectation set before it, but exceeds all cultural expectations by releasing a full movie which is the visual representation of their musical creation. It is a video for all of their songs, but combined in a concept that reads as a story.

Should Whites be Held Responsible for Their Racial Prejudice?

An Alternate Analysis of White Racism

   Some race scholars blame white individuals for racial oppression and for embedding racial prejudice into the nation's institutional framework. When accused of racial oppression, whites become defensive and develop strategies to avoid being labeled racist. Accusing whites has become counterproductive to the goal of ending racism. In this article, I develop a new theoretical framework to understand white racism. My thesis is that whites are not solely responsible for their racial prejudice rather they are a product of a racially prejudiced culture that has embedded negative racial ideology in all parts of its system.

   I first frame American society as a bureaucracy. Second, I explain why the two perspectives of power used to frame white racism are inadequate. Last, I present a third view of power that situates white racism within the structure of a bureaucratic society. Focusing the cause of racism on the bureaucratic system, instead of on individual whites, may lead to a better understanding of white racism and improve the racial dialogue between whites and blacks.

   American society is a product of bureaucratization. Robert Jackall (1988) explains how bureaucratization, being "always a system of power, privilege, and domination," has affected "the whole class and status structure, the whole tone and tempo of society" and has touched every occupation and profession (Jackal 1988, 10). In Moral Mazes: The World of Corporate Managers, Jackall analyses how bureaucracy determines how middle and top managers deal with power, credit, and accountability. In a bureaucratic organization, top managers have the power to make plans and they receive credit for success. Middle managers implement the plans but receive blame for the plans failure (Jackall 1988, 10). In a bureaucratic society, politicians have the power to pass civil rights legislation and they receive the credit for increased minority graduation rates and median incomes. Individual whites are expected to adhere to the legislation but receive the blame for continued racism. In a bureaucratic organization, middle managers develop "complex cognitive maps" of co-workers expertise, social slights, embarrassments, battles won and lost, vices, standards of dress, insider language, and the likes and dislikes of immediate managers. The cognitive maps are the foundation for how middle managers judge their colleagues even when the judgments are based on the "flimsiest of evidence."(Jackall 1988, 23, 24) In a bureaucratic society individual whites develop cognitive maps based on stereotypes, personal interactions, media representation, and strategies to avoid being labeled racist. The cognitive maps are the foundation for how whites judge blacks even when their judgments are based on little or no evidence. Cognitive maps help middle managers and individual whites respond to the expectations bureaucratically defined roles and it is within these bureaucratically defined roles that white racism must be understood.

Youth Leaders Rejoice: Celebrating the 50th Year of The Newsboys!

The WhatUpWally? office was buzzing early this morning as everyone logged on to their ITunes in anticipation for what unexpected album would be released today (tuesday is generally the favorite day of the week around here). 




Nothing could prepare us for what was to come.


After a few minutes of previewing a new Ben Harper song, debating which Death Cab album is the best, and downloading the new Holy Ghost! album.... all of the sudden we heard an OH SHIT!! from the game room. One of our writers was previewing a new Newsboys album and the song was a cover of DC Talk's Jesus Freak. The room stood in silence as we listened to the band give an almost perfect rendition of the youth group classic. After listening to a few other generic tracks such as Born Again, One Shot, On Your Knees, Mighty To Save, and Save Your Life, we all crowded around for a google search to find out a few important facts:

4. You can download the Newsboys new album Born Again "Miracles Edition" (Which I am guessing is the Christian equivalent of the Deluxe Edition). 


4.1. The only real miracle about this album is that there is still a market for my favorite 6th grade band. Not only a market but Todd Rhoades gives his "Miracle Edition" download 5 stars exclaiming "yet another great album by the Newsboys!" Really Todd? Is it a great album? Better question what are the other great Newsboys albums you speak of? Would one of the great albums be the 1990 classic Hell is For Whimps? Or would it be the exlusive remix album Go Remixed?
