Thoughts on Being White | ESPN, Linsanity, and A Moral Obligation

"It is our human and moral obligation to press this country to live up to its best ideals of social justice.

We can make progress against the entrenched racist system. We can reframe the dominant white racial understanding of this society to one that accents the liberty-and-justice frame, that at some level, most white Americans seem to accept.

At least rhetorically, and abstractly, most whites believe that each American has the right to an opportunity for a good job and income, decent housing, and good educational facilities for their children.

One critical issue is that whites take their everyday world for granted and ignore or rationalize the discriminatory and inegalitarian realities that so many Americans of color face in their daily lives.....

Clearly, this society would benefit greatly from encouraging many more whites to critically examine their everyday experiences with such racial events.

Too often, well meaning whites agree that racism is a problem with others, but never take the difficult step to analyze how they themselves may be contributing to individual and systematic racism in the United States."
