Austin Indie Pop | Quiet Company - We Are All Where We Belong

The WUW? Austin correspondent and roller blading specialist, Frank, tells us that there are two Austin bands that any indie music fan must have on their playlist. The first, always on rotation in the office, is Bright Light Social Hour and the second is Frank's favorite indie popsters Quiet Company. Stream the album below and make sure to check both band out in College Station, at the Grand Stafford Theatre, on Thursday, September 27th.

The newly renovated Grand Stafford theatre has an impressive line up this fall including The Octopus Project, Band of Heathens, David Ramirez, and Jonathon Tyler and the Northern Lights.

Perfecting the Hip Hop Indie Flip | STS - Gold Rush II

Hip Hop mainstay, STS, of the supergroup Money Making Jam Boys and frequent Roots collaborator, has cemented his reputation in the underground community through hard hitting punchlines and witty lyricism. However, on Gold Rush II, his still very dope lyrics, may have been surpassed by the creative flipping of popular indie rock bands like Fun,
  Sleigh Bells,

Hip hopster Yeezy,
Chromeo,

and mainstream powerhouse Maroon 5.

Although the sampling of popular indie songs has become a bit ordinary, the combination of STS's lyrical precision and the intense sampling proves to be anything but ordinary.

Local Hip Hop in College Station? | GQ Marley - D.R.E.A.M. Mixtape

WhatUpWally? is always pleased to put on artists in College Station that are on their grind. From Caleb Mak and Justin Wilson to GQ Marley and GMF clothing, the homies are putting forth quality hip hop and continuing to improve their craft. Similar to other Texas new schoolers like A.dD+, Sore Losers, and Kydd, GQ unites the third coast sound of his Texas elders with the smoked out, swagtastic, hipster sound similar to Curren$y, 2 Chainz, and the Cool Kids. All three of the CST rappers have made waves with their debut projects and although they have room to improve there is no room to hate. Check out D.R.E.A.M. and let us know what you think about the CST boys.

Pharcyde and Tribe Reinterpreted | Bizarre Tribe: A Quest to the Pharcyde

Now, the WUW? crew is constantly bombarded by new projects to be featured on the blog but every once in a while we come across something that combines creative energy with the classic jazz era of hip hop. Bizzare Tribe is one of those projects. Amerigo Gazaway takes the task of reinterpreting the production of Tribe using the original samples and layering The Pharcyde's vocal to recreate the sound of hip hop's golden age. Check it check it out y'all!

WUW? Recommends R&B | Colin Munroe - Unsung Hero Mixtape

Robert, the WUW? R&B specialist, dropped this mixtape in the office today. Munroe has floated beneath the radar over the last few years even though he has appeared on albums by Drake, Black Milk, 88 Keys, Slum Village, and Wale. The Unsung Hero Mixtape does well to establish Munroe as a legitimate voice in pop, R&B, and underground hip hop.

If you don't mind, we would also like to introduce you to the 2009 mixtape that introduced us to Colin Munroe.

WUW? Recommends | Talib Kweli - Attack the Block Mixtape

WUW? hip hop specialist and youngest staffer, Ariela, sent over this new mixtape from Talib Kweli and DJ Z-Trip... This may be the next best thing to christmas morning! Not only because Kweli is on the WUW? top 5 dead or alive list, but also because Kweli is always at his best on mixtapes and unofficial releases (see the Right About Now Mixtape).  You can taste his hunger as he devours tracks produced by Boy 1nda, 9th Wonder, OhNo, Don Cannon and joined at the the feast with Black Thought, John Forte, Skyzoo, Fashawn, Weezy, Styles P, Killa Mike, Mac Miller, Planet Asia, and Das Racist.

It goes without saying that a collabo with, one of the original mash-up DJ's, Z-Trip makes this the front runner for mixtape of the year.

Make sure you check out the WUW? Best of Talib Kweli playlist on Spotify:
